Counseling Compact. Here's Why Therapists Should Care.

If you're a counselor in Pennsylvania, you may have seen the news this week that Pennsylvania has joined the Counseling Compact.

My first thought was, "This is another sign that our profession is changing."

For years, many therapists have been limited by state lines. A client moves. A spouse gets transferred. Someone spends part of the year in another state. All of a sudden, a therapeutic relationship that took months or years to build becomes much more complicated.

The Counseling Compact is intended to reduce some of those barriers over time. Pennsylvania is now the 39th state, plus Washington, D.C., to enact the compact legislation. The next step is implementation before counselors can actually begin practicing across participating states through compact privileges. So, this isn't an overnight change, but it is a meaningful one.

Now that geography is becoming less of a barrier, what will help therapists stand out?

It will be therapists who understand the nervous system and can confidently work with both the mind and the body.

I've noticed more and more therapists asking questions about somatic work. Clients are asking about it too. They're reading books, listening to podcasts, watching videos, and coming into sessions wanting someone who can help them understand why their body still reacts long after the event is over.

From what I can see, that desire isn't getting reduced. If anything, it's becoming part of what people expect from trauma-informed care.

As therapists become able to reach people across a wider geographic area, it seems that building a recognizable specialty becomes even more valuable. Whether your passion is trauma, chronic pain, nervous system regulation, or clinically-informed yoga, people are looking for someone with depth—not just another profile in an online directory.

I'm genuinely excited to see where this profession is headed.

Greater access for clients is a good thing, because that may also mean there's a greater opportunity for therapists to continue learning and refining their craft.

And I think that's worth paying attention to.
